Prevent Vehicle Break-Ins
According to AOL Auto, nearly $1.3 billion in personal items and accessories are stolen from vehicles each year. Unfortunately, many of these thefts are a result of leaving car doors unlocked and expensive items like electronics or holiday gifts in plain sight. Taking preventative measures is the single most effective way to reduce the opportunity for a vehicle break-in.
Follow these best practices to keep your vehicle safe from burglary:
- Park your car in the garage and cover your car windows so criminals cannot see inside. In addition to protecting your vehicle at night, parking your car in the garage on a regular basis will keep would-be criminals guessing whether or not you are home.
- Lock your car at all times, even while parked in the garage.
- Remove the garage door opener and bring it inside with you. If a criminal steals this device, they may be able to re-enter your home in the future.
- Do not keep important documents in your car. Criminals can easily sell personal information or steal your identity.
- If you must leave packages or other valuable items in the car for a short period of time, lock them in the trunk or be sure they are out of sight.
